Subject: Computer "forgot" it has a CD drive

I think I messed up my computer. It doesn't recognize it has a "D"
drive--the CD drive. A while back I made some changes to the startup
on msconfig that were recomended, but I forget what they were. It was
some time after this that sometimes it wouldn't read a CD or DVD.
Sometimes retrying it helped. Eventually it stopped working all
together. I put off doing anything but now I really need it.
I tried system restore but this didn't help. I don't know if the
startup change made a difference or not. I don't know if this is a
software or hardware problem. Please help!
