University College Cork is inviting applications for the position of MSc Studentship
on the EU FP7 project NEURONANO: Do nanoparticles induce neurodegenerative
diseases?
This component of the project will investigate the routes of uptake, transport
and release of nanoparticles in filterfeeding aquatic invertebrates. The mussel
Mytilus edulis and the ragworm Hediste diversicolor will be used as model
organisms. The main objectives of the project are to assess

2. the time course of uptake and uptake destination within the mussel;
3. the importance of mussels in transferring nanoparticles to the benthos;
4. the significance of depuration;
5. interaction with deposit feeders and possible vertical transmission of
nanoparticles.
The research will be carried out in conjunction with the Department of
Biochemistry, UCC.
The position is for 24 months commencing 1st October 2009. Remuneration will be
€17,000 plus fees. An increment will be applied to this in year two.
